Located close to the Jharkhand border, Nalhati is a small municipality town in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. Nalhati comprises five gram panchayats, Banior, Kurumgram, Bautia, Barla, Kalitha Paikpara, Kaitha I and II, Haridaspur, Bara I, Bara II, Bhadrapur I and II, Noapara and Shitalgram. The entire geographicaln area of Nalhati has been divided into two administrative blocks, Nalhati block I and Nalhati block II. amous as one of the 51 Shakti peethas, Nalhati is among the most well known pilgrimage sites in the state for the Hindus. Besides its rural beauty and healthy environment have helped Nalhati grow into an interesting tourist spot nearby Kolkata.


Religious importance of Nalhati

The place was named Nalhati after the Nalhateshwari temple, one of the Shakti peethas. According to Hindu mythology, it is the place where the ‘nala’ or throat of Sati fell after being cut into 51 different pieces by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra.

Major attraction of Nalhati

Being one of the Shakti peethas, the Nalhateshwari temple is the prime attraction of Nalhati. Built by Rani Bhabani, the ancient temple consists of four thatched roodfs under which a stone is worshipped as Goddess Sati. The temple is set on the top of a small hillock, which is close to the Nalhati railway station and is thus easily reachable for people. Large numbers of Hindu devotees gather at the temple premises almost throughout the year to pay homage to the Goddess. Nalhati is situated on the bank of Brahmani river, which too offers a wonderful sight to the tourists. Being a town in Birbhum, tourists can easily reach other noted tourist spots like Shantiniketan, Tarapith, Fullara, Sainthia, Bakreshwar, Kankalitala and Rampurhat.

How to reach Nalhati from Kolkata

Being located close to the station, railway is the mode of transportation forv reaching Nalhati from Kolkata. It is a junction railway where old Howrah-Sahebgunj loop of Eastern Railway and Ajimgunj line join each other. One can avail any train traveling in this route to reach Nalhati. Nalhati is just 75 kms from Bolpur and so one can avail the Howrah Shantiniketan Express and get down at Bolpur and from there can take a taxi or a bus heading towards the Panagarh-Moergram Highway.Nalhati is located exactly on the highway and is thus easily reachable. Besides direct buses are also available from Esplanade, Kolkata.
